With food security issues growing and our human social fabric fraying— with communities forgetting how to grow and raise a seed, let alone a child—the power and potential of a school farming movement has never been more important or timely.

When we started the Shire Farm, we were responding to this sense of urgency and possibility. We weren’t experts. But we rolled up our sleeves and worked harder than we ever have—and saw directly how a school farm can become a priceless community hub, creating opportunities for community members of all ages to reconnect across generations and socioeconomic backgrounds while making a real impact on not only health and food security, but science and character. Incorporating the great mythology of the Lord of the Rings was an imaginative choice for our farm but we felt Gandalf’s words echoing in our hearts.

That’s why we’re now gathering a “fellowship of the farm.” We see the need and opportunity to collectively share knowledge and support and make the way forward easier together, not just for our farm but for others like us. Whether you’re considering starting a school farm yourself, have run one for some time or are someone who wants to support and be involved in other ways—this call is for you.
