When I first pitched the idea of doing a traveling cultural exchange with a pair of indigenous teenagers many people didn’t think it was a great idea. The ethical implication that bringing them over to a completely new environment and do most of the traveling by themselves was often questioned. That made me realize that Cindy and I would have to pay for an adult to fly them back meaning that they would have to fly with us to Costa Rica and pay for that person’s expenses while they stay here. Therefore we decided that not only due to time constraints and not being able to raise enough money for that we decided to take Costa Rica to them. We plan on doing several activities such as handicrafts, expositions, and storytelling as a way to connect both cultures. We managed to lower the budget for the stay in Mexico which means that most of the money donated will go to the funding of these recreational activities and a small donation to the organization in charge of representing and defending the rights of that specific community. The rest of the money spent on transportation and food comes from the profit gained from the food sales that we have been doing and will continue to do. Both Cindy and I are born and raised in Central America meaning that a percentage of our genes is rooted from the mesoamerican tribes that still maintained alive in Costa Rica and Mexico. Not only would we be showing the current costarican culture to this indigenous community but also let us connect with our ancestors.
