HR Project Reflection #3

Feedback is crucial for self growth and development. This week I was able to connect feedback and appraisals, and how the different appraisals are a way of feedback. By looking at Herzberg’s Theory of Motivation, I was able to understand what a person needs in order to self-actualize or improve. This made me think of the organization I’m working with, and if the employees are feeling comfortable in all of the steps of the Maslow’s Hierarchy to reach the last step of self-actualization. The information that my mentor sent me about the online programs that they currently have, gave me an idea of contacting each employee and getting to know their program better, and look at the way that the current changes in the world have affected them and the ways they work. I actually agree with this theory and the hierarchy as I imagine it would be difficult to grow as a person if I don’t have basic needs. It's similar to how we saw this same aspect in global politics, a nation is not able to develop if they are not able to offer water security to their population. Looking at the two articles from Harvard Business Review, was effective for me to understand and take a deeper look into feedback and appraisals. For example, in the first article, the author discussed performance reviews, and how they are an opportunity to adapt feedback, and evaluate the employees with individual goals and objectives that they set for themselves. I thought this was interesting as they are setting their objectives in terms of the work they do, and then they get evaluated on what they actually focus on. This allows the employees to receive a more focused feedback towards their own goals and position. I was also able to compare and contrast feedback to employees and students. As a student I actually consider feedback important to know what I am doing well and what I can improve on, and I connected this to how an employee might use feedback and it made me believe it is quite similar. Along these two main activities, I also spent around 6 minutes each day meditating for the focus training. I think this was an interesting experience as I saw that a short meditation before school really helped me focus and be more motivated and have more energy. This actually taught me that I perform better if I do this in the morning. This week was more of learning about feedback and appraisals and learning content, however, communicating with my mentor allowed me to understand even better what I could do in the next few weeks, and I also received more information on the organization and what they are currently doing, which adds to the knowledge I gained last week on the interview. In general, this week’s workload was very light and allowed me to spend more time on each activity to learn the content better and also spend time planning what I can do with the organization.
