To start, I wanted to reflect on communication with my mentor since I managed to find an effective way to reach out to them. I decided to contact the teacher I mostly work with over the phone, and I was able to get in touch with her which was very helpful. Everyone in the organization has been very busy with their current project, which is collecting and distributing food and other items to those who need it. This allowed me to figure out why I hadn’t received any responses from my past messages. (I am sort of considering working with someone else though just because the AM team is so involved with their current project. I’ve been helping my mom with the planning and delivery of her lessons, and I think it could possibly be better to do this instead because I don’t want to take any of the team’s time from working on their project and it is very difficult to contact them).
It was very interesting to learn about Taylor’s theory of motivation because it made me realize that it was almost on the complete opposite side of the spectrum than Pink’s theory. I think it allowed me to observe two very different perspectives that can form part of a business’ organizational structure and consider how other people motivate themselves. Lately, I have been a bit confused about the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and I think these were very good examples of each and how different they are. You could really see how extrinsic motivation is about what you can get for yourself by completing a task, whereas intrinsic motivation is more about motivating yourself to complete a task regardless of whether you’ll get something out of it or not. I just thought that was really cool and it definitely made me think.
