Update: Night of the Arts
Night of the Arts
What is your CAS project and how is it helping the community?
- The Feria La Paz is a farmers market which is hosted on Wednesday afternoons on the La Paz campus. It allows local vendors and small businesses to sell products and snacks to a variety of crowds. The Feria attracts not only La Paz families and students, but kids from all different schools and community members. The Feria was a strong La Paz tradition and it has been too long without it! Thanks to the amazing team of parent volunteers, Feria has been brought back!
- Every Wednesday from 3 o’clock to 3:30, only students will be allowed to buy, and after the first wave is gone, the rest of the community will be let in to shop. We have been mandating the use of masks as a precaution so that we can continue to have a safe Feria. I look forward to seeing all of you there next Wednesday!
Interesting aspects people should know about? (My role in the project)
- I have defined my role as overseeing most of the marketing of the Feria on Facebook, Instagram, the newsletter, etc… I have also helped figure out some permanent signage for the Feria which has gone on the bus stop outside of the school. When I first set out on my project, I planned the Feria start date much sooner than it could have happened, but with all the help of the amazing parent volunteers, and Alex Hill, who has been on the Feria for years, it is all coming together. I am super proud of all the work the whole Feria team has been putting in because the level of enthusiasm and proactiveness has been so amazing. The Feria is really a never ending project and there is always work to be done, but I couldn’t be happier with how the first couple Wednesdays have gone and look forward to the upcoming Ferias.
What do you need from the community?
- What do I need from all of you? Just come and support!! Stop by every Wednesday, buy a snack, enjoy the live music and support all the wonderful vendors we have.
Deadlines or pertinent information that the parents can remember.
- Feria happens every Wednesday from 3 onward for La Paz students and faculty and from 3:30-5 for the rest of the community.
Discuss 7 learning outcomes of CAS that are applicable to show the value of your project.
The most prominent 7 learning outcomes of CAS that are applicable to my project are:
- “LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process”: The Feria was a project that had to be re-taken from the ground up this trimester. No one had been in charge, or thinking about the feria in so long that it was sort of left up to us to figure out everything. With the help of Alex, we took initiative and started planning the best way to bring it back. It was very vague in the beginning but with a group of about 7 parent volunteers dedicated to starting the Feria back up we managed to overcome the challenges. Covid was a big issue on our mind and It was hard to determine whether it was ethical for us to start the Feria again and the impacts it would have on our school. We put in regulations and came to the conclusion that if we managed it safely we could no doubt have a weekly Feria.
- “LO 3 Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience”: So much work and extra time has gone into this project and I feel that it has really encapsulated the idea of a CAS project and I am super proud of what has been accomplished by the whole team.
- “LO 7 Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions” As I mentioned earlier, the ethical implications of restarting the Feria and the choices to do with Covide were a big deal, and the group had to consider it before bringing in many outside community members into our school. The choices we made could/will affect many different stakeholders in the La Paz community so we needed to be careful with how we managed it all.
