Update: Service Journal Entry Spring Break
Service Journal Entry Spring Break
Continuing my waste management project seen in the previous journal entries, this is a way in which we thought of transporting the trash before speaking to the mayor. This is Pancho, one of the water buffalos that they use in the farm to transport the cattle food in the cart attached to him. The first idea before speaking to the mayor was to use Pancho and his cart to transport all the trash once a month to a big trash bin about a kilometer away from the farm. One day I woke up early to go see the process of the buffalo transporting the food and help out with the work. I found out that it is difficult as they have to fill up the cart with malodorous and heavy pineapple concentrate for the cattle and then walk and guide Pancho to the different areas. Then we tried to do a practice of the route that they would do to take the waste out, however it was very difficult and stressing for the buffalo and due to the steep and rough roads, it was not very effective. This was a great learning experience as I learned about working in farms. At the same time I figured out that this wouldn't work as a transportation method for trash, and this is when we came up with the idea of having the truck come all the way to the farm. This connects to the IB learner profile of risk takers, as I took the risk of trying this idea although it was not very effective and then we took the risk of contacting the Mayor which was actually very effective and a great idea.
