Spring Break Service Journal Entry

Even though I can't directly visit Abriendo Mentes, which is the main part of my CAS project, I've still been finding ways to take on my project and help out the community. Abriendo Mentes is pairing up with a lot of other organizations in the area and started a group called Juntos Por Guanacaste, which delivers food to families who need it. I wish I could be able to help them directly with giving out the food, but I can't put my dad at risk by going out, so I asked my mentor what I can do to help from a distance. She said that right now for safety reasons they can only accept donations in the form of money, but she said it would be great if I could spread the word to people that I know. I'm part of a lot of different Facebook groups, so I helped to share their campaign to those groups. This helped to raise awareness about their efforts for the community. Another thing that I am doing (with the help of my mom) is starting a garden. We plan to donate any leftover vegetables that we don't use to our neighbors and other people in the community who might need food as well. I like this idea because it is sustainable and directly helps others. Lastly, I have been helping my mom to film her videos that she uses to teach the Pre-K classes. This inspired me to make my own videos as well and I am going to start doing them on the days when I would normally go to Abriendo Mentes. There is a group chat with a lot of the parents that I can send them to, which can help them to learn English even from a distance. I can't wait to see the kids again though. I miss them a lot!
