September 24th, 2020
Over the last three weeks, I launched the 2020-2021 student and we have started working. We had had three meetings during lunch on Tuesday, organized a movie night, and started an election for middle school representatives.
I’m really proud of my student government. I was worried that the online student government would be awkward and unsuccessful. I was scared that no one would want to contribute to meetings and that we would get nowhere. But it’s been the complete opposite. The members have so much to say and so many cool ideas and opinions and they are comfortable sharing them, even the younger grades. That makes me really happy, I’ve created a positive, inclusive environment that encourages participation, that’s what I really wanted. Also, I have a group of people who are willing to work and who want to work and I think that will be the key to our success this year.
This week, the student government had a bunch of announcements to make in the morning meeting and I worked to delegate the announcements so multiple people from the student government spoke in the morning meeting. Watching them speak in morning meetings and make announcements riffing off each other made me so proud. People that don’t usually speak in morning meetings were being leaders and it wasn’t just me speaking, I was very proud of them.
Something that is challenging to figure out is what the student body actually wants. Because I don’t think that students just want online movie nights or virtual competitions, but I’m not sure what they want. We discussed this in our meeting this week and I sent out the different members to do market research within their grade and figure out what people want and need from them. So by next week, we should have a better idea of the concerns of the student body and then figure out how to address them.
Overall, I’m happy with the trajectory that the student government is moving. I proud of all my members and so happy they decided to run for student government. I’m excited to see what the rest of the year holds. Hopefully we can be the exception to the “student government never does anything” trend.
