To be creative this summer I decided to recreate a picture I had taken with friends into a painting. I went to Sage Brush art studio where I have previously done art classes. It had been a long time since I had done any art so it was super fun to be creative and listen to music while painting. The picture I recreated was of a beautiful sunset and the silhouettes of me and a friend walking into the ocean. I started the painting before I left for vacation, took a 3-week pause, and finished once I got back. I wasn’t super happy with how it looked in the beginning, but eventually, I got back into it and the painting came together. Painting has always been something that I enjoy because it’s so therapeutic and really lets me relax and enjoy myself. In my opinion, the IB learner trait of being open-minded really shines through during the art process. Anyone that has done art in the past will know that you can’t control what happens to your piece, and you must be able to go and flow with it. There were times where I didn’t like what was happening with my painting but continuing to add to it, and keeping an open mind, allowed me to create something I love. I think that being reflective is also a big part of art because you need to be able to look back and understand/appreciate the journey you went on to get to where you are today (which goes for lots of things in life). The learning outcome of CAS that was demonstrated was LO #1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth. As I mentioned before, art takes lots of patience and self-discovery, and while many people say they’re “bad at art,” art is whatever you create and can be presented in tons of different forms. It’s all about finding what works for you and growing and improving your own style.
