Week One of 11th Grade and CAS with COVID

What is CAS to me? For years I have always heard about CAS. It has been integrated into my system but what does it mean? To me, CAS has always been an opportunity for people to explore and help their community through their passions. CAS was catered by the IB program as a way to create global citizens who care about their community and are involved in finding solutions to social issues. I choose my CAS project, the Investment Club as a way to learn about investments while also teaching my community, allowing them to live a more financially stable life. Luckily my community is full of people who are willing to support me in this project, and I have their knowledge as one of my resources. I also have the knowledge of experts online and will be able to access many very valuable pieces of information through the internet. CAS has changed drastically due to COVID-19, CAS has always been community-focused, the goal to actively help your community. For years this has been accomplished through physical interaction, and now that is not possible. Also, my community has now more than ever been in financial need as many have lost their jobs and cannot have a consistent flow of income. This change will really challenge our ability to persevere through our project as well as our ability to initiate our plans within these difficult times. My project is something that is very much so accomplishable through COVID. The investment club can be treated just like any other class and will be easy to do through the use of zoom and can run just as planned. My classmates all believe that my class will be just as easy and possibly will create a larger group of people to come as you don’t have to depend on rides. The first steps are to continue to make more lesson plans and really just start. Once I am able to start up my classes the project will begin. I need to start contacting people willing to speak and share their knowledge. I will achieve these steps by working during class time to create plans and contact people whenever it is possible. I can’t really have my project be away from a screen. I could possibly do maybe a few classes in person, but we would also still watch videos and be in conference calls with people that are far away. Although this is not ideal, the technology that I have access to is a tool that I will have to use for my CAS project.
