Access to veterinary care

Team Name/Location

team against animal suffering, Costa Rica, Guanacaste

My project’s main focus will be to combat animal cruelty, bring access to veterinary care to families who can’t afford it, rescue abandoned/ mistreated animals from the streets or unfit homes and facilitate their adoptions to give them the home they deserve. To do this I will begin by organizing a large fundraiser consisting of a tennis/pickleball tournament. This will happen with the support from my parents who own a hotel with tennis courts. This event will bring together our community and I will also use it as a medium to share information on animal cruelty and the effect of animal industries on our environment. This event will have food, baked goods, drinks, and a raffle with all funds going to this project.
Once I have collected enough funds I will work with a local veterinary and shelter to be able to start actually getting animals the care they need. I will also create social media pages and share my phone number so that people can contact me to report animals in need. Since veterinary care is so expensive in CR many times animals in clear need of medical care won’t receive access. Finally my goal is to apply through Ms Amy, our CAS teacher for 2000 dollars, raised through an event organized as a class and fund/aid organize a neutering campaign for our community.

What I like:
I'm a big perfectionist and need things to go the way I planned. I'm a big control freak, and can't ever leave anything unfinished or do things carelessly. An activity I love is dance, this is something I have done since I was a little girl. It's a way to express yourself and it allows me to focus on myself. Dance really pushes your body's limits and being able to perform is super rewarding. One of my main interests is the mistreatment in the meat, dairy, fish, egg, industry, and all the negative consequences that come along with it. This is an issue that has always been very important to me and as I learn more and more my passion for this problem only grows. The impact these industries have on our environment and the lack of information out there are insane. Major environmental organizations don't provide any information on their pages about the impact our diet has on climate change, the amount of greenhouse emission it produces, the number of resources like water land, that they use, etc. With climate change being our main issue right now this is a topic that has so much relevance which is why it's so important to have open conversations and educate each other.
What I Do:
A skill I have developed over the years and now consider one of my strongest is my decision-making skills. I know how to evaluate a situation, and different options moving forward, then I always establish my priorities and create my decision based on the information I have. Another skill I have is self-motivation, I'm very independent and believe I always take initiative to pursue and accomplish any of my goals and responsibilities. I'm very much a perfectionist and will always try and do everything possible for whatever I'm working on to be successful without needing to have someone reminding or making me do the work. I have always had this drive that allows me to push through obstacles in order to succeed. I also have developed good communication skills, through school and my personal life.
What I Want:
I would like to gain experience working with other professionals that are in the area my project is in. I also hope to gain more knowledge and be able to learn about people and animal's personal experiences surrounding this topic. I hope to gain contacts. I hope to be able to make an actual impact on these animals' lives and help educate people. In the long run, I hope this has a positive impact on the environment, even if I won't change many people's minds. I also hope that my collaboration with the shelter and vet actually makes an impact and helps their business allowing them to continue saving animals and providing them with safe homes.
