Ajambo Mary/Busia, Uganda
The Crisis
According to research, 1 in 3 girls in Uganda drop out of school due to lack of access to menstrual products and school fees. This leads to frequent absenteeism, low academic performance, stigma, and, too often, early pregnancy and marriages.
UNICEF reports a low transition rate of girls from primary to secondary school, and many of those who do transition drop out before completing it. In communities like ours, girls often sit at home for years three or four years waiting for a parent or kind relative to send them back to school. Instead, they end up married or pregnant before they ever get the chance.
Goal: Ending early marriages and teenage pregnancy among vulnerable girls by removing barriers that hinder their education
Activities
Girls’ Education Fund
We provide scholarships for vulnerable girls at risk of dropping out or those already out of school. Most of these girls are victims of early marriage, pregnancy, and poverty.
Menstrual Hygiene & Management
We train girls to make reusable pads and provide them with materials. This reduces absenteeism and restores their dignity.
Girls’ Safe Spaces
Our mentorship clubs are safe havens where girls learn about their rights, sexual reproductive health and rights, gain confidence, and break the cycle of child marriage and early pregnancy.
