The #sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) Math Club

Team Name/Location

Charlie Herman, Tamarindo, Costa Rica

My project consists of creating a space where high school students are able to work on math, gaining new abilities and confidence around math. I offer this class once a week after school where all high schoolers are able to join to work on homework and have a form of support there if they need it.

What I like:
I love basketball, and love math. These activities are something that I can do hours on end without any loss of interest. Playing basketball is not just about the scoring or the passing or the competition the sport contains. It is also about the true passion, relationship and paths that the sport can bring. Basketball allows me to compete with my friends in a friendly way where it brings every single on of us together. Because the sport requires so much teamwork you have to create relationships of trust between your teammates to play well and can create relationships that last a lifetime. Although the faces of basketball are Micheal Jordan, Lebron James, Stephen Curry, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and more absolutions freaks of nature, you don't have to be so authentic as them. The two things you need to play basketball is a hoop (which could be anything from a professional hoop to a circle made from your arms) and a bouncy ball of any kind. So this sport is truly something that anyone in the world could participate within any financial circumstance or age. Because the sport is so easily accessible and popular it open many extraordinary paths to so many people who would've never seen those path if it wasn't't for the sport. It can allow many people who grew up in poverty and hardship create a life of luxury for themselves. For example Dennis Rodman live in the streets from when he was 18-20 years old because his mom kicked him out of her house. Yet because he got into basketball he was able to avoid having to live on the streets and get involved in drugs or many other awful things and play alongside the greatest basketball player of all time on one of the greatest teams of all time. That is what truly amazes me about the sport of basketball and the power it has on people's life. On the other hand I love math and the power that it brings to simple numbers. When I start to think about the mathematical processes that are involved in so many things that we do every day it blows my mind. I think about how math helped create computers, improve movements, make furniture and allow us to explore other planets. It blows me away because all these things are possible because of numbers and symbols. Yet these simple numbers and symbol if the are put together can create the most amazing things in the world. So the fact that I am able to play around with these symbols to be able to understand the way we move, how much money someone makes or even be able to calculate the probability of a crazy situation blows my mind. In conclusion I love math because it can explain the unexplainable through the some of the most simple terms.
What I Do:
Some things that I am the best at are leadership and dedication. I have learned these two skills through my true passion to be successful. I always have had that desire to be the best at what I do and to not give up. Therefore I have always wanted to lead myself or my peers to succeed. Through this desire I have learned what works and what doesn't. I have realized that I can't be to bossy or controlling yet I need to always somehow be in control. So I have learned to listen to others ideas and allow people to take on the project their way as my way doesn't work for everyone. But as this is happening I need to make sure that I am there to guide my peers and make sure that if they make a mistake that I am there to help them learn from their mistake. But I can't let this failure last long or damage the final project I need to make sure that they are failing but failing quickly. One of the most important things that I have learned is that I need to be there to motivate and set an example for people. So that's where I mastered dedication, I have learned that if and when I start a project I am going to finish it. And this has brought me to many situations that aren't the healthiest because ti a certain extent it is impossible to finish every project. But that is who I am and how I operate.
What I Want:
Through this project I want to develop new skills such and find an idea that would have a large impact on my community. A skill I want to improve is communication, because, although I can very easily communicate with my peers and people I know I can become very shy and timid around new people and can't easily communicate what I need to communicate. I would also like to discover more about myself and what I am passionate. I want to achieve this by trying many different projects and allowing myself to try it to my full potential, yet allow myself to try other options to find the perfect project. I also what to be able to find a project that I would be proud to have as my legacy within my community. I don't want to settle for average in this project, I want to find something that is unique to myself yet allows me to truly leave a positive mark on everyone who is involved in this project.
