I think there are many necessities they need for hacking photosynthesis. One of which being food security. With the rising population in the United States, food security is something that needs to be taken into consideration if we are going to be supporting our growing population. Another need for artificial photosynthesis is to create new sources of renewable energy. According to the article, researchers find that solar fuels can serve as green replacements to many of the crude oil, gas, and coal we consume in our environment.
