Humans are shaping, or attempting to shape nature by replicating photosynthesis. They hope to use plants to gather renewable energy. The scientists doing this believe that they can harness the energy gathering power of plants, because plants have been gathering energy from sunlight for millions of years. The hope is that synthetic photosynthesis will increase food production in the coming years. The plan is to alter a specific molecule that plants use. This molecule is called Rubisco. Rubisco takes carbon dioxide out of the air to help plants create oxygen. Unfortunately, Rubisco often takes in oxygen instead, which is the waste of the plant’s energy. Taking in oxygen creates a toxic substance that takes all of the plant’s cells to remove. To test if this could be altered, tobacco plants were given much less carbon dioxide than usual. Some of the plants fared well in these conditions. Because of global warming, these conditions will become more common. The plants that succeeded were removed from the greenhouse and grew four times larger. There is a lot of potential in this plan. Food production will be able to increase exponentially and crops can thrive even with altered levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

I agree that scientists need to find a way to replicate photosynthesis, but there are always consequences to consider. Like Rubisco is a very big consequence because even though it takes carbon dioxide out of the air, it also takes in oxygen, unlike most plants. You did a really good job explaining what scientists are doing now to try and hack photosynthesis.

I love how you included the effects of global warming into your post. It is always good to think ahead because future changes could possibly affect the plans we had made prior, when maybe the planet was in a more stable condition. I also love how you added a little description of the experiment the scientists conducted on the tobacco. It adds evidence to your reasoning behind your rubisco claim. Overall, great post!

It is quite interesting to see all that is in front of us and how we have overcome so many things as the human race, I don’t mean to be looking on the dark side, but with global warming being such a daunting task it will be interesting to see what us humans do and if we will be able to overcome this situation, or if we downfall, what will be the new powerhouse organism or the earth?
