How does ground waterpumping effect rivers?

My project is about how groundwater pumping affects the rivers. For my experiment, I will be researching groundwater pumping in Arizona as well as the rivers. I think the groundwater pumping will affect the river negatively because water pumping is removing water which essentially interrupts the water cycle. This is just my hypothesis, but I will do a lot of research and figure it out.
