It is interesting to learn about since I for one love spicy foods but am horrible at handling spice. Throughout the video, we learn that ‘spicy’ does not really exist, it’s your tongue’s nerve receptors for heat reacting to the compounds in the food causing your mind to be tricked into thinking it is actually on fire. This explains why people start to sweat and their heart rate goes up while eating spicy foods. So in a way, it is our body telling us our mouth should be on fire and that is the foods we call spicy. The video also talks about how different people will have more sensitive heat receptors in their mouth and nose being the reason some people ‘handle spice’ better but it pointed out that studies have shown that you cannot ‘build up’ a spice tolerance you just take the pain better.
