When I was in middle school I remember two specific examples when I used songs to memorize things for exams. When I first heard these songs I often thought I would never be able to memorize them. For example I had to memorize the books of the bible, my teacher had us split the books into thirds and assigned each section a song. In the end we memorized the books of the bible by singing them to the tune of popular kids songs. By doing this we tricked our brain into repeating the kids songs but switching the words, therefore we were “thinking” without realizing it.

That’s cool! While I didn’t personally use a song to learn my books of the Bible, I have definitely heard of songs that help you memorize them. I have also listened to and heard of songs that help you memorize the fifty states, state capitals, etc.
Great job on your post!

I actually also learnt a song when I was younger memorizing the books of the bible, and even still know the song, it’s really cool that you also did that. It’s interesting, how when putting the books in front of a song, our brains are more willing to memorize them.

That’s an interesting technique. I like how you said that you were thinking without realizing. I never thought about why songs work as memorization tools, but that explains it very well. I think that it’s amazing how many different tools there are to help people memorize things, like repetition and song.

I also used the same method while I was memorizing the periodic table in 8th grade, and I’m pretty sure I can still recite it, “cause you have hydrogen and helium, lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen…” It didn’t go along with a kids song though, I kind of just figured the rhythm I would use as I went.
