What is self awareness?

I believe that self-awareness is the ability to recognize that you exist and are an individual. I do not think the mirror test is accurate because it is difficult to tell if an animal is able to feel the paint without looking at it when they touch the mark. The biggest flaw with the mirror test is that mirrors are not found in the wild. I think I would change the mirror component to a pool of reflective water, which is more natural. I do not think that the test is completely inaccurate, because many animals known to be intelligent have passed.
