I have leadership experience in mentoring or interpreting nature, so i have a dream of making my own kids conservation program in my village. just to make an understanding of how important nature is.
My name is Segopotso Oja, a guide by profession. I was born and raised in the Okavango Delta of Botswana. Living in the delta have made me learn a lot and brought my heart very close to conservation. when i was 10 years old, i came through a program known as children in the wilderness, which promoted my love with conservation and understand more about it. after finishing my school, i worked in an office in Maun then i didn’t enjoy it. After 2 years i went to the bush where my heart belongs and continued looking after nature and interpreting it to people. i have a great leadership in mentoring therefore my dream is to create my own wilderness program for kids in my community. my wish is to share my story with the future generation, wanting to see at least 60-70 percent of the kids being inspired to dwell into conservation. further more i will be keeping track of the kids that i mentor to see how they are doing at school, for those that will fail at school, i will being chipping in and take them to any hospitality training schools to study any course of their wish.
My Strengths
One day when we went out with my father to go look for our cattle, we were charged by an elephant. He stood on his ground, advised me to not run away and he clapped his hands and asked me to join him to make more noise and we shouted saying please go back we are not here to harm you we are just passing by. The elephant stopped and then diverted away. Then I realized the best way to communicate with nature is not harming it but to try to connect and know how to live with it.
When we were at primary school we used to walk 7km to the next village where there was a school. We used to encounter animals, especially elephants. I remember we were charged by an elephant and I quickly remembered how my father handled the situation and did the same. Our lives were saved and my fellow students had an experience and got a new idea on how to handle this kind of situation.
My dream is to share this with the local kids. Having more conservationists in the community will really help to restore and keep nature as natural as it is.
My Community
Soccer teammates: being with my fellow teammates always returns my energy and feel free to share my ideas with them and try to engage them in and support me to succeed.
Heart Connected or Very Close Friends: these are always my pillars i learn a lot from them and they always support me and wish me a success.
Guides Refreshal Courses: being with other guides and share ideas is one of the things that i always enjoy and i always find it as a good social bonding event and connects me more with nature.
Life Partner: she is my anchor, she guides me, take care of me every day, motivates me and also gives me support on my future dreams.
Family members: my father was one of the core founders of the Okavango Community Trust, his love and passion he had to the nature and also him raising me out in the nature have made me feel connected to the nature. My elder Brother Teddy is also a conservationist at heart, he is on a project of bringing or restoring nature. i always get engaged and work with him when i am at home so this makes feel i am living the life close to my heart.
