This week I learned how to be more mindful and how to be present at the moment. As I got to the Focus Assignment each day, I chose meditation as I wanted to become better in controlling my mind and my thoughts, to be quiet for a moment. My brain is constantly overthinking and over analyzing everything and this many times causes me to ruin so many things that could have been good. As I meditated each day for 10 minutes, I noticed that I was calmer and more focused on the present. I tend to think a lot about the future and many times don’t focus on what’s in front of me.
I think that both appraisals have their advantages and disadvantages. I like formative appraisal as it is ongoing feedback that teachers or any supervisor give to me while I work. I like this because I get to learn as I do the work and I can correct my mistakes fast. On the other hand, summative appraisals allow me to have a general idea of how hard I am working and how it is reflected in my personal performance and achievements. I find the formative appraisals more effective as it is during my learning process and it can positively affect the outcomes as I have feedback from professionals.
When I get feedback, my self-talk does get in the way of what I am hearing as sometimes I don’t like to be told what I am doing wrong. Sometimes I can be really un-open-minded depending on who is giving me the feedback. I think this partially happens because I put a lot of effort into what I do and I get frustrated when people don’t appreciate it the way it is, but I do understand that nothing is perfect and that there is ALWAYS room for improvement.
I appreciate the feedback that I get from people that are close to me as I know that they want to see me grow and become a better individual. They know that I don’t receive feedback the best way so they know how to deliver it… If it is feedback from a teacher, I take it differently as I want to excel academically and I want to do the best I can. Sometimes hearing feedback hurts because the person delivering it is being harsh, but I guess people just have different ways of expressing ideas and you have to be strong and listen for improvement. In general, I can say I do appreciate all types of feedback but I don’t like it when it sounds like they are criticizing my work rather than acknowledging it.
It is hard to give people honest feedback at the moment but I do think that it is important to deliver it even if it means it is hurting their feelings. I think it is better to know the truth than to believe you did something good and that’s not the case. Because feedback is to improve, I don’t think it should be considered bad but there are a lot of ways to give feedback that can result in damage to how the person receives it. I think making a balance between positive and negative aspects is good as it will leave the person feeling better about themselves and not underestimating who they are.
Receiving feedback does motivate me to work harder because I like to learn and keep improving. I think it is important to have a relationship with the person that you are giving feedback to because it is important to understand how they will act and receive the feedback. There is a sense of trust and having a relationship with that person means that you know them and if they are sensitive or not when receiving information. It does strengthen the message because there is trust in one another and because it is a relationship, many times the person giving the feedback wants the best for the other.
Herzberg’s theory of motivation does relate to appraisals because appraisals provide the opportunity to recognize and reward employees and to ensure that they feel valued for the work they do. When an employee does good work and it is present in a summative appraisal, it can make the employee more motivated to work for the organization as its salary or role can change into something that is more beneficial. Appraisals can be motivating as it shows if an employee is doing a good job and the rewards it can have. When you are compensated for doing a good job, you want to keep doing it because you know your hard work is paying off. As a student, seeing good grades shows the amount of dedication and time one can put into assignments, exams, or projects, you want to keep doing it because you’re not only proud of yourself but your family is too.
