On Tuesday the 26th I was able to join Tanya with the assembly of the baskets and the deliveries. I organized all my online classes so that I would be able to assist and help. During this day, I was able to join Tanya and Holly and see how they ordered the fruits and vegetables and how they assemble them at school. During this, I was able to talk to Tanya and she told me how Holly wanted to pass on the project to her and how she wanted my help for this. Holly is already too busy and doing the weekly deliveries and ordering of fresh vegetables and fruits is too much for her so she is passing it on. This is an opportunity for me to get more involved with the project. Making the baskets was really fun because I got to see Miss Amy and some students again while doing something for the community. It made me really happy to deliver the baskets because the families are so grateful and they show nothing but love and gratitude towards us. I love doing this because it reminds me of the beautiful community I live in and it allows me to be grateful for the things and life I have.
I also sent out emails to the parents of all the students from La Paz except for the scholarship students’ parents. As I sent the email, I had hoped that a lot of families would want to donate products or materials but unfortunately, I didn’t get a lot of replies. However, I did get responses from families that wanted to help with the assembly of the baskets and I got to be more knowledgeable about other people who are taking the same initiative as Tanya, Holly, and Miss Amy. This email also allowed Simona to contact me and since she is working with Cepia she is willing to help me waste less money on the baskets with cheaper distributors and products. She said they do baskets for 4 people for 4 weeks with the same dry products, vegetables, and fruits that we do but that it costs 72$ per month. If I get to work with her then maybe I can help Tanya make the baskets better and find better distributors who charge cheaper and are more organized. I can also take a leading role in this as I think I am a good communicator and I am organized, and it will give Tanya less work, this is known as delegation!
I was also able to contact Miss Cat and I informed her how we could deliver the art supplies to the students who needed them. However, there was a lack of communication as we couldn’t deliver some materials because we only knew the names of the students and we only had access to the names of the parents. Next time, I will communicate to Miss Cat that we need the name of the parents and not the students so there is no confusion.
This week I was able to learn and develop as a learner as I got to familiarize myself more with the assembly and delivering of the baskets. I think this could make Tanya trust me more and give me harder work to do. I will try to convince her to let me do the ordering of the weekly vegetable and fruits as I think this will facilitate her work and I will also be able to use skills that I learned in 10th grade when being in Operations in the Snack Shack. Simona also gave me the contact of her distributors and I think working with them will allow the canastas to be cheaper and therefore add more products into the baskets that will fulfill the needs of the families. I also learned that when asking for help, it is better to reach privately to families rather than sending general emails as I think that I would’ve gotten more responses from more families if I reached out to them personally and privately and asked for specific things from them. I might do this next week once I know what specific items I can ask for that we are lacking. This week I also got to work on my gratitude towards my family and the things I have and this has allowed me to refresh my mindset since we’ve been in quarantine for such a long time.
