Cindy / Journal Entry #52 – Jan 14, 2021
I decided to create my own compost a few months ago for my biology experiment, my mom helped me a lot to figure out what materials to use to create it effectively. Some things that I added were: Grass clippings.
Tree leaves.
Vegetable food scraps (coffee grounds, lettuce, potato peels, banana peels, avocado skins)
Black and white newspaper.
Printer paper.
Most disease free yard waste.
Cardboard.
Vegetarian animal manure
This activity helped me to keep up with my gardening hobby and I also learn more techniques for planting. I was putting into practice the IB skill of inquirer by expanding my curiosity in this topic and also balanced because I managed my time correctly. After I was done with my biology IA I decided to use the compost for our gardening project and these plants started to grow out of it. They are part of the succulent family. Besides challenging myself with a new hobby I also combined this new hobby with an experiment for IB, making my school life and personal one interdependent for a few months. I learned how commitment and responsibility are fundamental for any activity even as simple as it seems to be such as planting.
