Cindy – Journal Entry August 17th
On August 18th I went to Huacas where I got to volunteer with Amanda and Katherine. We were helping in a castration of dogs and cats from 8:00 am to 1:00pm. There we had to clean their ears with alcohol after the surgery, make sure they were not bleeding and if they were we had to clean their wound very carefully with cotton and alcohol. Moreover, we also had to cut their nails, put some honey in their mouth, pet them and take them with their owners. During the time we were there I was able to see the surgery and I learned more about dogs and cats and how to take a better care of them. This activity made me realize of how amazing these animals are but at the same time how important it is to avoid the reproduction of certain dogs and cats if their owners are aware of their complicated situation to keep them. What I mean about this is that taking the responsibility of having pets should be as important as being a parent since, many dogs and cats live in the streets because their owners could not keep them at home. My mind kept thinking about the lives that might be at risk nowadays since not everyone in the world can afford to pay a castration. This shows how important it is to appreciate the work of many veterinarians that support these campaings with the help of other organizations that try to save these animals in their daily lives and of course the help of volunteers. I believe that thanks to being a volunteer on this day, now I am more knowledgeable and caring. I remember that later that day… right after when I came home, the first thing I did was to pet my dogs and take them on a walk because everyone deserves a good life, even our pets.
