On Friday October 8th the 11th grade IB art class accompanied the 12th grade art class on a trip to the beach to help them with their land art. I was in Ashley’s group and the art piece that I helped her with was different circles that were created with words that are used to undermine or verbally assault women.
What connections did I find with areas outside of Guanacaste?
The global issue that Ashley addressed in her art piece is of great importance because many women all over the world experience verbal assault on a daily basis. Her art brings awareness to this because especially in Guanacaste it is engraved in society to undermine or objectify women. This happens a lot in big cities where women of all ages will walk down the street and get cat calls.
What were my perceptions of the project when I started?
At the beginning when she explained her project and her inspiration for the project I thought it was a good idea and I was excited to be in her group. There were a couple of aspects like she wanted the waves to wash away the words as if they were being erased from society that weren’t planned out so well. We didn’t know if the tide was going in or out so we had no idea where exactly to write the words on the beach and they ended up being too high. Despite the fact that we weren’t able to incorporate that aspect into the art piece it still turned out amazing and it still had a strong impact.
What was the value of the project? How did it affect others?
The project has value because if it reaches the people who were able to see it on the beach or if it is shared to the community it might start to make a change in the way people treat women and they will be more aware about it.
What can I do to continue to bring change to the world in the future?
It is super important to continue to talk about global issues such as the one that Ashley addressed in her art piece. There is an influence that art has on people that words may not be able to obtain. I can also address global issues in my CAS project by making them the themes of my dances and choosing songs and create movement that reflect those themes.
