Summer Service

I provided service by going to the community of Brasilito and picking up trash with my classmates Geyra, Jojo, and Emily. We went around the soccer field/ plaza picking up any trash we found on the way and later threw it in a garbage container. We collected a total of 9 beer cans, 4.5 plastic bags, 3 cans, 5 cigarettes, 4 plastic bottles, and many small pieces of plastic. The area was actually cleaner than I expected. Doing this with friends is a fun way to not only keep the community of Brasilito clean but also to enjoy it while doing it. I also helped at the school by making a mural for the new garden behind the science lab. I helped by writing a quote by the artist Van Gogh in both English and Spanish, the quote said “I dream of painting and then I paint my dreams”. Helping Karina with this project made me happy since I got to share my artistic talent while doing something good for the school. This service connects to learning outcome number six because when cleaning the community I am helping to decrease the amount of trash around it, if this trash doesn't get picked up it would just keep accumulating and later causing contamination in the community. Contamination is a global issue that affects a lot of countries' wildlife and humans and even a small act like picking up a small piece of trash really helps to control it. I would connect this service to the Caring trait because when my friends and I went to clean around Brasilito we showed how we care for the community and how we wanted to help it stay clean. I also showed empathy when helping Karina with the mural since we both wanted the same thing, to make something pretty for the school.
