Vacation Journal Entries: Service

Yesterday (July 19) I collaborated with Abriendo Mentes, Panache Sailing, and En Sus Manos to clean up the plaza and beach of Potrero. We were with 16 teens from Mexico who were part of Travelers With Cause, a group who travels to different communities around the world to take part in social projects in order to address the needs of the area. It was really interesting to get to know them and learn about where they had traveled to and what kind of projects they were involved in. This was a moment when we were implementing the IB trait of being Communicators, because we could communicate and collaborate well together even though we had just met. We split up into two groups and got to work. Our trash was separated into garbage and recycling. While we were cleaning up the plaza, I suggested to Olivia that we separate the bottle caps and other suitable plastic in a different bag to later clean it and donate it to Dona Tapa, which she found to be a good idea. This shows how I am a Thinker, because I was able to create a connection with this cleanup and my project and implement my idea in an effective way. We continued working until the plaza was free of trash, with 6 full bags of trash and recycling. Later we found the other group and reflected on how it went, representing the trait of being Reflective. We managed to pick up a lot of trash and felt very satisfied with our work. Overall, it was a fun experience and I can’t wait to partake in another one and hopefully organize one of my own in the future.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Work collaboratively with others
  • Engage with issues of global importance
  • Show perseverance and commitment to your project

EDIT: This was from my initial idea for a CAS project, but I still really enjoyed it and learned a lot from the experience.
