Naming Your Project

Choosing a name is a great way to help people recognize and remember your project. It is an essential piece of marketing that helps you discuss your project with all your stakeholders. There are lots of ways that you can go about this process – try some of them below.

Watch the video about the importance of choosing a suitable name for your project.

Consider Your Audience

When brainstorming names for your brand, it’s important to think about who your audience is and what they will appreciate in a name.

    • Think about the stakeholders in your project. Who will be using your product or service? What are their preferences and expectations?
      • Example Audience: Kids under 12
        • Kids under 12 might want a name that is fun, playful, and easy to remember.
        • They will appreciate a name that is simple to pronounce and spell.
        • Names that are imaginative or evoke a sense of adventure can be particularly appealing.
        • Avoid names that are too long or complex.
  • Examples of Names for Kids Under 12:
  • “MagicPlay”
  • “ZoomBuddies”
  • “GiggleTown”
  • “AdventureQuest”

By keeping your audience in mind, you can create a name that resonates with them and meets their needs and preferences.

Brainstorming Session:

  • Think of interesting words that go with your project. Use a thesaurus and dictionary to find words that are different but are similar to the ones that you are already using to define your project.
  • Using the template, brainstorm potential names for your brand using the categories. Write down as many names as you can think of under each category. Remember to consider the qualities mentioned and be creative!
  • Create a short list of names – no more than 10.

Research if any of your brainstormed names are already in use.

Ask for Feedback from your stakeholders.

  • Then, choose your name and post it to the path with an explanation of why you chose the name for your project.
  • Bonus points if you start to think about a logo to go with it!
