Reacting to Failure

Throughout this project, you are going to have to take risks that might lead to mistakes or might lead to success. You need to be willing to take on either, and many of us are too scared of failure to try. Here you will get to practice different strategies for dealing with failure and see what works best for you!

Strategies

  • Watch the video at the top of the page or read the article.

Practice Role Play

  • Choose one of the failure scenarios from the list.

FAILURE SCENARIOS

Sarah studied hard for her math test, but despite her efforts, she scored significantly below her expectations, leading to feelings of disappointment and self-doubt.

John tried out for the varsity basketball team, putting in extra practice hours, but he didn’t make the cut, leaving him feeling disheartened and questioning his abilities.

Maria spent weeks working on her science fair project, but her project wasn’t selected for the school competition, making her feel like her hard work was for nothing.

Alex prepared extensively for the debate competition, but his team lost in the first round, causing him to feel like he let his team down.

Emily applied to join the school’s prestigious student council, but her application was rejected, leading to feelings of exclusion and frustration.

  • Write a short script (maximum 2 minutes) where you act out both the failure and a positive, resilient reaction to it. You can use this helpful list of strategies to give you a good idea of ways to react.
  • Complete the reflection and post on the path:
    • What strategies did you use to handle the failure?
    • How did you feel after choosing a resilient reaction?
    • How could this scenario apply to your real life?
