Task Initiation

Ever found yourself stuck when it’s time to start your homework, clean your room, or study for a big test? Well, struggling to get things going (aka task initiation) happens to everyone, and this can be a big problem for having a successful community project. However, you can work on this skill by using some of the strategies proposed below.

Learn the Strategies

  • Take the quiz to find out your go-to reason(s) for not starting tasks and read about positive strategies to get you moving.

Practice

  • Pick a task from this list that you’ve been putting off starting:
    • Organize your room
    • Write an essay
    • Study for an exam
    • Apply for a job
    • Create a work of art
    • Complete a mid-term or long-term project for school
  • From the quiz results, pick a strategy you think will help you the most.
  • Record yourself starting the task. Show how you’re using the strategy and then reflect on how it worked.
    • If it didn’t help, try a different strategy in the same video.
    • If it did, share how it feels to finally get started.
  • Post your video on the path. Keep practicing and using these strategies throughout the rest of your life!
