The Amatasi Project: Connecting communities through the power of traditional sailing

Team Name/Location

Sea Mercy & Partners, Pilot Location: Tonga

Sailing catamarans in the South Pacific pre-date nearly all other civilizations by millennia. Their migratory voyages
are legendary. Sail powered vessels and fishing traditions also link the modern worlds of Europe and America with traditional cultures such as Australia’s first people and Pacific Island cultures. These links seep down through generations.

Now, with our Amatasi Project pilot program, we have the opportunity to build and integrate a “fleet” in remote communities across the South Pacific that will renew access to this economically and ecologically sustainable resource and tradition. With a prefab design from award-winning catamaran designer James Wharram, these boats will serve communities with everything from school transport to emergency services to local economies of fishing and sailing education.
