Exercising causes the hippocampus to produce more cells that will build up the mass of the hippocampus. Since the hippocampus’s primary job is to retain memories, a bigger and stronger hippocampus would retain memories from further in the past. The same is true for the prefrontal cortex. Exercise makes the prefrontal cortex produce more neurotransmitters like dopamine which increases one’s mood. Due to the fact that exercise makes the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex larger, they can become more resistant to neurological diseases like dementia because it takes longer for effect to happen. In my life, I have seen the same effects. When I work out I feel more energized and I’m typically in a better mood. I also feel that when I work out I am able to focus more on my school work. I currently exercise 4 to 5 days a week, where on 3 of the days I do CrossFit. After watching the video I feel that my workout routine is good and meets the “minimum” to reap the benefits of exercising.

Cambrie,
That explanation is very thorough and makes a lot of sense. I have also noticed the positive building effects of exercise and how it improves your mood and focus.
Thank you,
