The process of learning

In the past 2 days, I have been exposed to some things about how we learn and how we process what we learn. I was in an International Baccalaureate conference call where they were talking about how this generation learns. (Gen Z) They learn quickly because they are not taught as my generation was taught (GenX). We had to retain knowledge but Gen Z is being exposed to changes so quickly, they are adept at learning and then throwing away that knowledge to let the new knowledge in to adapt. This is helpful for learning new technology.  )But not so helpful in exams.) I have also been reading Adam Grant's book, Hidden Potential, and he also discusses the benefits of throwing away some of what we learn by knowing when to soak up knowledge and also when to release that knowledge to others or just filter out what we don't need. I am processing this by thinking about releasing fears or roadblocks to continuing to work on Project Wonder. The new elements that Danny, Matt and Amy have created in the past couple weeks have really made a huge difference in how I think about what we are doing with Project Wonder. Some of what I was envisioning before is not needed, because the model is changing as we work. But the knowledge of business and tools that help students structure a project are necessary and I would like to convey those better. I now have motivation to do that. Sometimes it is just about waiting, watching and listening to others to see what is necessary to learn or to throw away. It is about giving energy and then seeing how that energy lands in the world or with other people. I look forward to using this insight in the upcoming weeks as we develop the program more.
