September 12, 2019 – Jimena CAS Journal Entry

Volunteer Work with Green Power CAS Project

On the day of September 11th of 2019, the class of 11th grade embarked on an adventure to clean the beaches of Playa Penca and Potrero, as well as plant some trees in order to reforest Playa Penca.

We started the beach clean up and planting at approximately 8:30 where a member of the Asada de Potrero and Cindy (a member of Green Power) explained to us the importance of why we’re planting these trees, which was due to the constant deforestation of trees in the zone and many other things. I was in charge of the beach/community clean-up, and we were able to fill 3 bags filled with trash and 2 with possible recycling material.

Upon arrival at the Plaza de Potrero, I immediately noticed the amount of trash there was lying on the ground and how nobody decided to pick it up. In addition, apart from that I also noticed the lack of garbage cans that there were (I only saw one or two) and the shocking amount of trash there was inside the soccer field.

Seeing this with my own eyes made me reflect on myself and just be grateful for how I was always taught about the importance of throwing trash in the garbage, recycling, etc. Furthermore, I have decided that I am willing to help the Green Power team on building garbage cans and signs saying “no bote basura” (don’t throw trash) whether it’s donating my time or materials for it.

Learning Outcomes:
Worked collaboratively with others: I had to work collaboratively with like 9 other classmates and take turns carrying the recycling bag, and two other teachers.

Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities: I was very determined on cleaning that community and leave it impeccable without a trace of trash behind. I was very determined and persistent in leaving a nice act of kindness to nature.

Engaged with issues of global importance: Plastic abundance and deforestation is something humans have to combat day by day and doing acts like these help us help Earth in some way.

IB Learner Profile:
Reflective: I have reflected on the amount of trash I consume daily and how important it is for me to change my lifestyle and choose eco-friendly products.

Caring: I was caring for Earth and helping it in some way.
