Habitats wise you will find them in wetlands areas. there are common residents. they are monogamous, in their breeding season they become very territorial both parties fight for their space together.
Diet wise they have a very diverse diet, they can feed on small fish, frogs, insects, seeds and aquatic plants. they are even known to practice a very interesting symphystic relationship behavior known as mutualism where by two organisms' benefit, they can feed or pick on some external parasites on hippos such as ticks as a way of feeding and hippos will being relieved from the parasites because they are known to infect them with diseases.
