How to Problem Solve

Without even realizing it, you’ve been picking up different problem-solving techniques. Now that your project is underway, it’s important to remember these techniques and actually use them!

Problem Solving Techniques

  • Check out these problem-solving techniques that you’ve already explored, or that might be new to you!
    • Brainstorming: You’ve probably been doing this one since elementary school. Throw out as many ideas as possible without judging them. Setting a timer can add some fun pressure!
    • Mind Mapping: Draw out problems and solutions using diagrams.
    • SWOT Analysis: Figure out the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.
    • The 5 Whys: Ask “Why?” five times to dig deep into the root of the problem. Watch the video to understand more about this technique!
    • Role-Playing: Act out different scenarios to see things from various perspectives.
  • Pick a problem you’re dealing with in regards to your project, no matter how big or small. Choose two techniques from the list and try them out.
  • Reflect and post on the path:
    • Which techniques did you pick and why?
    • How effective were they in solving your problem?
    • If you didn’t find a solution, what other support do you need? Maybe advice from a mentor, brainstorming with your team, or learning more about the topic?
