"Marko and I had a great discussion about stakeholders yesterday - we discussed why businesses use this tool - especially managers that need to communicate to multiple stakeholders and stakeholder groups about different decisions that they make. We went through some scenarios where businesses or schools might need to use the tool and then Marko made his personal stakeholder map. Identifying, plotting and thinking about how/how often he needs to communicate with his stakeholders took about 30 minutes. His comment after was " pointing out the obvious is beneficial sometimes." Meaning that this is something he does think about in the back of his head when going through his day - but putting it down on paper and discussing it has value. He also set a goal for his time at La Carolina Lodge. Marko will add value while he is at La Carolina Lodge without being a hassle by completing all tasks during the day. This is a SMART goal - but we also talked about attitude and communication while he is there. We are going to meet next Sunday while I am in Spain and will explore more goals - long term and write mission statements. (10:00am his time and 5:00pm my time in Spain.)"

"Nadia is embarking on the last couple years of high school with clear goals for universities in the United States. Creating a project that highlights her strengths and helps to improve her areas of growth in a meaningful way is the plan!"

"Marko and I met yesterday and had a lot to talk about! His internship at La Carolina Lodge is coming up soon and his homework was to come up with questions about how the month was going to go. He will need to set up a meeting so that he can have the discussion with Alejandro. Some of the questions that he has are: What will my day look like when I am there? What will my daily duties entail? Will I work with the animals or with the plants? Should I read or learn about anything before I arrive to be better prepared for the experience and add value sooner? How many days a week will I work? Can I have visitors while I am there? Things that I would like to do are work with animals and understand how to raise them and care for them. I would also like to be a tour guide on the horse tours to help with the kids and teaching the guests about the farm and the area it is in. I can help use my English skills to support these tours. Are there any cultural differences that I should be aware of and how to manage those differences? We discussed the Guatemala trip dates, purpose and schedule. Here is the document with the logistics and schedule. And then I taught him what stakeholders are. We went through the different stakeholders – internal and external and discussed them in terms of some different companies – Disney, United and the soccer complex that is in his area. That is as far as we got yesterday. Next week we will complete his personal stakeholder analysis and start thinking about a mission statement that includes his goals. Lots to do and it is very exciting!"

"Marko and I started to work together a couple of weeks ago. He is building the groundwork to create a project in his community. The first month is always learning more about self. Marko started with strengths and found that his top strengths were: Honesty Perseverance Prudence Curiosity Zest He has a lot of courage in his top strengths and that will definitely help support him in his project – especially in the leadership role. He understands Opportunity Cost and the act of giving up something when making a decision. We explored those decisions and found consistencies with his strengths when making decisions. Today I would like to start with his questions for the owner of Catalina Lodge, where Marko is going to do a month long internship this summer. Then discuss values by starting with the Malcom Gladwell interview on Revisionist History – The Tragedy in TX. And then work on Stakeholder Analysis. Here is the template for Marko to populate and then create his communication plan from. I look forward to the meeting today!"

"We had a great meeting yesterday that consisted of a clear understanding of our values so that we can make decisions with these values in mind. They are HONESTY - we will be honest and be accountable for our actions. OPENNESS - we will be open to new ideas and new people. We will make sure that we take other people's perspectives into account when making decisions. SERVICE - We will provide service to our community in ways that are thoughtful and necessary. We worked on our name some more and know that we would like our logo to be a female dragon - (you can see Megan's drawing of a dragon on her stakeholder map) and we would like to have a nest included in the name. We will try to finalize that this week. They also filled in their stakeholder map and used it to think about who in their lives are the most important stakeholders and how to communicate with them. All in all a great meeting where we continued to get to know each other and explore some new concepts and move forward in our project planning!  "

"I said that we were going to focus on balance sheets today and I was wrong. I had the structure of the balance sheet printed and practice problems ready but we never got to it. I do believe that it was a good lesson though. First, we watched the video together. Oliver put in noise cancelling headphones because it is hard to listen to your own voice. However, the video turned out well! It is posted on our project page under the document section. We used our stakeholder map to think about the video. Where should we publish it? Who is going to see it? What are their perceptions going to be? What does that mean for our project? This took longer than I expected as they really thought about the ramifications of posting the video and the different stakeholders that we have for our project. The map is posted above. I said that we needed to think before we took action on the video. And that the stakeholder map helped guide us in the analysis. They decided who our stakeholders were first. Then they discussed how they were going to feel about the video. As you can see above, they didn't think that everyone was going to be supportive of the video. But they did believe that it clearly represented their project. Because of our conversation, they were aware of some of the drawbacks of the video messaging for different members of the community and Eitan is ready to talk about these decisions with the community. The video was well executed and thought out. The necessary steps were taken to create something that looks great and tells a story. Everyone learned about making a short commercial, they all participated and worked together. I am proud of the process and excited for our next activity that we did plan during our meeting. We are now ready to go! Maybe we will get to balance sheets this week."

"I am excited to see what the girls decided on for their project name! They had a worksheet from this naming your project path to work on during the week and we will decide on a name today. I will also try to get some feedback on the process. I listened to one of Malcom Gladwell's podcasts today called Tragedy in Texas. I have linked it because the Revisionist History podcast is one of my favorites, but I got an idea at about minute 12 in this podcast to really define our values and it explains why. If there is ever a very big decision to be made by people in a group, it is good to be on the same page as far as values. So, I am going to have the girls listen to a few minutes of the podcast and then decide on 3 values for their project. We are going to explore stakeholders and communities today. We will make our stakeholder map and think about communication to our different communities. I will let you know how it goes."

"The plan that I had was to talk about passions. I had just read the book and seen the movie Hail Mary Project. The scenes after he woke up from his coma in the spaceship were the most poignant for me. He didn't have all the baggage about what he "should" be and was able to figure out what he was by observation and looking inside himself to see what he was feeling. I realize that sometimes that might not give the correct answer to the question - who am I, but it makes for an interesting thought process.  My idea was to tell the girls about this and to share this quote from Chad Sanschagrin (2026): "Most people think identity is something you discover. It's not, it's something you practice... When you name who you are and what you did, you step out of circumstance and into ownership" Wow! When we started discussing this idea - we were able to dive into what they are interested in! It was an amazing discussion that helped me understand their beliefs and how they connected to their strengths and values.  We discussed politics in Costa Rica, the discrepancy of wealth,  different perspectives and how it is really hard for people to understand one another. And also how easy it is to SAY that you understand what someone is going through.  It also became clear that sometimes it is easy to SAY what you what to be, but that it is pretty clear after watching people that their actions do not back up their statements.  What became clear in our discussions is that the girls want to help people. They want to make a difference in someone's life and learn about them so that they understand them. We are going to reflect on this next time and work to redefine the project ideas.  I look forward to our next meeting!  "

"Today we are going to be back at my house learning and discussing some business topics. I am excited to be back in a routine - and back learning. However, we need to work on and promote our next activity which is in 12 days - so a lot to do! Starting with reviewing our video! We will do a stakeholder analysis about the perception of our video and when and where to post it. I would like to see what they learned from the experience of writing (Nate), acting, directing, editing and producing the video was for them. I will frame it as feedback for Cloe. Next, we will plan the next activity and create lists of what each of us need to do to make this happen. Then we will learn about balance sheets. They know the basics - the equation and what each of the things in a balance sheet are - so therefore, they should know where they live on a balance sheet. Like cash lives in the current assets area of the balance sheet. Today, I will teach them what the correct structure of a statement of financial position is for the IB. This is important - because it doesn't look like a balance sheet from the United States. However, the equation is the same! Assets - Liabilities = Equity Then we will look at working capital and why that is so important for an organization and discuss liquidity ratios. If time, we will look at Disney's liquidity and think about how they are doing. I am not really sure that we will get to that. Of course, I am ready for next week with a few Disney articles so that we can really analyze Disney. They can start thinking of what they want to do for their Internal Assessment for IB Business. "Last night we were at Las Catalinas with Cloe. She worked with Nate to edit the video and I took Oliver and Eitan to see if we could figure out the bulletin board for the notifications and we also decided on our next event. Really, Nate and Cloe did the most work. We needed to figure out the bulletin board because that was something that we started a few months ago - so that took a little time and energy of running around - getting it from Oliver's house and figuring out who was going to be in charge of hanging it up. Now it is closer to where we want it - outside of Copper and Stone. We also realize that once it is up we need to make use of it. We also decided that we were going to hold a beach potluck for the people in town on Sunday May 17. I am looking forward to this activity - and hope it doesn't rain. :) We will provide the drinks and the paper plates and cups for the event and ask others to bring the food. It will be from 4:30 - 6:30. The boys went back to their original research to decide what the next event should be. Oliver reached out to the event planner from Las Catalinas and asked if we could be featured on the screen in the Central Building so that if people are checking in they will see that it is happening and plan for it. Nate knows about it and will work on an advertisement. Eitan also brought up a good point that we will need to branch out of Las Catalinas soon and interact with Abriendo Mentes. I am excited about this change - they feel comfortable planning an event, and now they want to do something meaningful for another community. While last night looked a little chaotic there were glimmers of getting things done and moving forward. Next week, I will finish Balance Sheets with them and we will move onto planning the event. I also want to touch on motivation soon!"
